As part of the District's ongoing curriculum review cycle, each curricular area is reviewed by a committee and brought to the School Board every five years. In August 2023, the K-5 English-Language Arts (ELA) Committee began its process by reviewing the most recent standards, and the goals for each program and researching proven instructional practices.
Primary instructional resources are not used in entirety in the Merton Community School District. We review the prioritized resource to determine which components align with our approved standards and leverage those components for instructions. During curriculum writing, our teacher teams will be looking to remove any lessons or materials for reasons such as the capacity of our primary/intermediate school-day schedules for RLA instruction, deemed developmentally inappropriate, do not align with our District policies, or if they are not aligned to our district and community values.

Reading and Writing Project (K-5)
The Merton Community School District believes in providing an educational environment that develops a lifelong love of learning, in order to accomplish this vision, our district firmly believes in the workshop model. Through the reading and writing workshop, developed by Lucy Calkins and the educators of the Reading and Writing Project every classroom (K-8) is committed to helping all students become avid and skilled readers, writers, and inquirers.
The workshop model is a method of teaching that focuses on developing deep comprehension skills as well as quality writing instruction. No matter what classroom you would step into, the following pillars would be identifiable:
-
Explicit mini-lessons in which grade-level skills are modeled through the gradual release method(I do, We do, You do)
-
Active participation of all students in the mini-lessons
-
Independent reading/writing time
-
Differentiated instruction based on each child’s needs
-
Student Voice and Choice throughout the literacy block
-
Flexible grouping and strategic student partnerships
