The Merton Community School District's K-8 curriculum is aligned to the Wisconsin State Science Standards and may also include portions of the Next Generation Science Standards.
Primary instructional resources are not used in entirety in the Merton Community School District. We review the prioritized resource(s) to determine which components align with our approved standards, and leverage those components for instruction. Materials that are not being used from priority resources may be removed for reasons such as capacity in our schedule for science instruction, deemed developmentally inappropriate, or if not aligned to our district and community values.
Full Option Science System (FOSS) and Project Lead the Way (PLTW) Launch (K-5)
"Over a quarter century before the inception of A Framework for K–12 Science Education and NGSS, FOSS was applying research-based practices to engage students as scientists, challenging students to make sense of real-world phenomena as they learned how to solve problems. Today, FOSS embodies the three-dimensional learning the standards were made for—teaching not just rote knowledge, but scientific thinking."

PLTW Launch (PreK-5) taps into students’ exploratory nature, engages them in learning that feels like play, and encourages them to keep discovering – now and for whatever future they choose. Students build in-demand skills through inspiring activities that aren’t typical in a traditional classroom. They are immersed in energized, hands-on activities, projects, and problems that build upon each other and relate to the real world. Students experience integrated learning that blends computer science, engineering, biomedical science, and more. Throughout the modules, even the youngest learners apply their math and English Language Arts (ELA) skills, learn science to standards, and adopt skills that are foundational across disciplines.
