Number of Years Teaching: 20 Number of Years at Merton: 4 Teaching Philosophy: - I love to learn, and I have a passion to share that love of learning with my students. I work with all students, and I believe that all children in my classroom are capable learners!
I always use student first language, and I make it a priority to speak these words aloud and to use them in written language. I want my students and their families to know that I see them first. Their disability doesn't define them.
I believe strongly, like my mother taught me, that all children need roots and wings. As an educator, I have the opportunity to give my students wings to fly towards independence. I strive to provide my students with tools and systems so that they may demonstrate that independence and when possible graduate from requiring an Individual Education Plan all together.
I believe that students should attend their IEPs and when possible contribute in their IEP meetings and ultimately run the meetings. I think students best articulate their strengths and challenges, and in running an IEP, they’re best able to advocate for what they need as successful learners.
I pride myself in my excellent communication with students and parents. I appreciate parent advocates, and I value that they are the experts in their children. I know that collaboration alongside parents, all teachers on a child’s team and the child is the key to a successful education.
I share, and I think it’s important to share tools that help all students learn. I believe collaboration and sharing is the key to the success of all learners in our schools.
To continue to best teach my students, I believe in furthering my own education. I seek out mentoring and advice from expert teachers in my school, attend workshops and take classes at my school and local colleges. I am comfortable and enjoy teaching students with diverse backgrounds and different levels in the same classroom. I believe all students can learn, and I love to teach them.
