What is Forensics?
Forensics is public speaking: acting, storytelling, and oral reading held at a competitive level. You prepare and deliver a “categorical speech” that is scored against a rubric by a professional judge. This determines your standing (rank) among your peers in public competition. (aka-meets)
Who participates in Forensics?
Middle Level Forensics Association is open to students in grades 6, 7, and 8th grade. Students will have a chance to continue their forensics career at the high school level if they so choose.
Where are the meets held and when does the season start?
Meets are held at different schools around the area. The season officially starts in early February and runs through March. We hold our practices earlier than this to get students prepared. Team members compete as individuals or in small groups, and compete against students in the same category. Competitions are held on Fridays and Saturdays in February and March, and are evaluated by trained judges following established criteria.
What happens at a meet?
Most meets have 2-3 rounds. In each round students present their “piece.” In between presentations, students socialize; there is often music and students may purchase food. Students are assigned presentation rooms based on category. The judges’ critiques are available at the practice following the meet.
